Veterinary Services
Since beginning her veterinary education at Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine in August 2004, she has been very interested in the idea of owning her own large animal ambulatory veterinary practice. Her professional interests include equine preventative healthcare including dentistry, equine podiatry and field surgery. Dr. Mitchum also enjoys working with cattle, sheep and goats focusing on developing herd healthcare programs for producers.
Dr. Mitchum enjoys trail riding with her Thoroughbred gelding and spending time with her husband, son and daughter.
Dr. Emily J. Mitchum started Lowcountry Large Animal Veterinary Services in July 2010. Dr. Mitchum received her Bachelors degree in Zoology from North Carolina State University in 2002 followed by her Masters in Animal Science in 2004. Following completion of her veterinary degree received in 2008 from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in Auburn, Alabama, she relocated to Asheboro, North Carolina to serve as a large animal associate veterinarian with a mobile large animal practice. This position allowed Dr. Mitchum to work in a large animal ambulatory practice focusing on equine and small ruminant medicine. In May 2010, Emily married Dr. Josh Mitchum of Yemassee, South Carolina and moved to the Ridgeland area. Josh is a small animal veterinarian at Riverwalk Animal Hospital and a 2007 graduate of Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine.

"Our Haflinger, Mo, had developed chronic diarrhea. Dr. Emily and Dr. Victoria performed examinations, fecal analysis, and diagnostic analysis and it was determined that Mo had IBS. Dr. Victoria prescribed a medication and during the entire medication regiment (two months), she called weekly to obtain a status. During this time, I also called her with questions which she gladly answered and also researched when necessary. She has been concerned and involved the entire time and we appreciate her dedication to getting Mo well."
